I sometimes watch videos of my now 14 yo son from when he was 3-8 years old with wonder. I am both amazed at how cute he was and how autistic he was. I do it to remember and be grateful, but strangely I miss those days too.

He didn't potty train until four, didn't talk much until he was five, mostly didn't answer questions in full sentences without scripted responses until fourth grade.

Today we went over science and French homework for his regular education classes in eighth grade. He shows me how to do things on my computer, walks to the grocery store alone (it is next to our apartment complex), buys groceries from a list by himself and carries them home. He loves Borders and makes his own comics. I mean saga type comics. He has won a few art contests at school and belonged to the art club. He was tested for and admitted ti his school's gifted program last year. He has two good friends (also HFA) who come over to hang out with him on the weekend. He is still autistic, but I no longer fear he won't be understood or be able to fend for himself if he becomes separated from me. At home, he still giggles over things that amuse him and only him. He still runs around and crashes into furniture when he is excited. He has a bad electronics obsession.

I remember the exhaustion and fear of those early days. Why can't I get his attention today? Why doesn't he talk more? Why is he spinning/running in circles? Why does he want to line up scrabble tiles in long lines and look at them sideways? Why do other people have kids that recover with gluten free bread and my kid just loses weight and gets weirder?
Those days are hard, and there probably really isn't anything I can tell you that will turn off the worry, but I believe that if you hang in there he will get better. It may take years, not weeks, but if you keep at it, he will get better. You have a much better shot than my son if only because the science has come a long way since 1995.
